Saw this in dc chat the other day.

While on the face of it, it seems unfair to not share anything, I think can sympathise with the people doing this.

There is a large number of dc clients, let's face it, who share... shit. Even with the minimum limit now enforced, you do a search for anything new and it's the same old story, only the power users have it (Anach, Kahuna, Styrix, Shaggy, etc) and getting anyone else's list gives you several Gb of apps, mp3s and other boring crap.

My current session of dc is something like 300Mb down, 4000Mb up simply becase there's not much worth getting, but I seem to be getting hammered by leechers regardless.

Personally, I run 1 slot free so that I can reserve slots for the people who are actually worth giving stuff to, because I know that they are nice guys and also have me in the favourite list, or else will open slot for me no problems in return.

Just my opinion on the matter...

Is there any way of finding out who has what slot free/open

Cause im forever uploading, yet trying to get dl's happening are nearly impossible cept for the nice guys like FUH (there are others) who normally gives you a slot.

Is there anyway of implementing a script like the test for amount shared, to test for slots shared. Cause I swear some arent sharing at all..

Like physco said, some people have absolute shit. yet even then you cant get a slot of them, and they have nothing worth while getting...

Also I have seen a few with there install directorues shared, like WTF, they are no use cause there are no registry settings, and files which might be plonked within the system directory somewhere..

i always have at least 3-4 people leeching off me.

I give people slots usually when they ask. otherwise no one gets anything completed.

share what you download ???

The way the Hub is surtpose to run is you share what you have leeched off other users (once it is complete only) so that way the popular files are spread more sources and can spread easily
This need to be enforced more I guess to make it all work so if some one is getting something major from you once completed check to make sure they have it shared. If they dont ask them why and if still no joy DOB THE BASTARDS IN to Phil or Stuart

Also a problem im finding is some people have so much shared variety wise it can be hard to get a slot all trying to have the most data shared
good example is cus-server (not pickin on you dude) but by having 200 gigs of movies shared dating back over years stops people from getting the newer stuff if i want to watch a movie which is now out on dvd or vhs ill go hire it not download it but some users will download.
To sumarise we should all share what we download and we should try not to share so much old stuff as it just clogs it all up

Most importantly Be Nice to people

Oh just a little side note set the small file size limit to at least the size of your file list that way people dont have to wait for a free slot just to see what you have to do this in bcdc++ 0.262a go in to advance2 and change small file size up (get a mate to check your file list size)

But it is also good to get old stuff sometimes too.

Though if people want old stuff from me, they ask and i upload it.

Most people leeching from me want current releases.

What you really mean is "several Gb of apps, mp3s and other stuff that I'm not interested in."

Not everybody is obsessed with getting the latest game, ripped DVD, or screener. The hub is about diversity. I actually like getting new mp3's. And by new, I don't mean latest releases. I mean "new" as in stuff I would never think to buy or haven't heard.

The hub exists to cater for all, not just one small niche.

On warning people:
Yes I have. Unless they share the first iso they just got off me, I will refuse to give slot on the other(s). Alternatively, as soon as a 'quality' user joins the queue, the leechers get kicked.

On 'useless crap':
Heh, well said Johnd. That said, I have no problem with good quality, professional apps such as your share. A niche, you say? Well, if you consider the percentage of total bandwidth used, I think you will find that movie/game images make up a very large 'niche' of this community's use.

The only reason most people are here is to get free downloads that will not impinge on their monthly quota. Large files do so, small files do not, therefore large files are more demanded. You can get mp3's or small apps from anywhere.

All I can say is I've been uploading constantly at 6k+ for a year now, and some days I think, "why am I bothering?"

For me the real question is, has DC reached the limit of it's usefullness for us, as a community?

I know this has been a contentious issue in the past, and I hope because of a certain person's personality, rather than a flat refusal to look at an alternative.

Perhaps it is time to look at something else. I've been doing a bit of research with edonkey/emule, but I'm not very impressed with it's ability to block connections from non-Netspace users. I can do it, but it's a bloody kludge and not intuative to setup, for either the client or server side (one of DC's big pluses). But I do like the multithread capability.

And now we'll go through it again. Things change over time. And things should be reviewed every so often.

But it can evolve into one.

Yea i agree with Johnd we really need to move forward an try different clients to share with, surely there is something out there better we can use?? That adleast allows fkn multisourcing :o

Like use mIRC for chatting, swapping file lists, and use a newer client to share stuff between each other.

As i havent been using the hub in awhile and i try to keep my filelist updated with the latest in the scene, but its hard with only 12k upload as i can only really share to 2-3 people at a time :| and i see my upload queue list grow larger and larger and wish i could share faster to people.

I also at one stage had no free slots free to public people due to people asking for slots an doin the 'swap thing' where they give me a slot and i give one in return. I know thats not the right thing to do, but i was after some files off them so i closed public slots off, to give the others on my fav's list more bandwidth.

I mostly always try to give slots to people who need to finish a large file, say someone on my list needs a slot for a game and they are 60%-70% through the download, i will allocate a slot to them so they can finish it off, as i find thats the best way to help others along in obtaining the game/movie their after quicker.

Instead of someone who queues up a file on my list and has 0% completed.

My share looks a little scumy compared to a lot of you guys, especially some of the newer stuff that I have downed but until I can get a new drive there is not a lot I can do except make a list of stuff I have on cd that I can up on request. A few more people could do this as well I guess.

Its good to see people wanting to share more stuff when they get more space.

I believe DC Hub has reached its limitation.

I get leeched off heaps, yet can never get a slot for the stuff I want. These days its easier for me to find someone who has it on the wifi network than here.

On the matter of sharing the latest stuff, I am with johnd - I have no interest in the latests game (except Splinter Cell 2 when that comes out), and now these days I cant even find anyone with anything I want.

have you tried askin for a slot. or asking for a file.

Also its obvious that someone who spends all their time in there is going to get a slot over someone who just pops in now and then when they want something. As you look like a leecher, not a sharer.

I never have a problem getting a slot.

I only got hooked up a month ago, so I don't really have that much to share - everything I have worthy of sharing will be available though. I think a 15GB limit makes it difficult for people just joining the community. It also promotes people to boost their share directory by adding less than useful stuff. I could add 100GB of DVD rips tomorrow if I wanted, but doesn't anyone else really want Lawrence of Arabia?
