SWG Emu

So I got the thing downloaded....and I start up the launchpad...

When I select the Core3 Server (The only server available) it takes me to the login screen...but when I try to make a character it just says "Connecting to the Galaxy..." and doesn't do anything after that.

It says Core3 is online...and I don't see any other servers to pick.

What gives?

(What do I do to get a private server up and running?)

You need to read the FAQ on their site :P

There is a bug that displays the galaxy as offline. So when you get to the character screen and it says offline. Press escape and go back to login, then login again and it should say online.

Usually happens when returning to the login screen from another screen, so you will have to do the same thing when changing characters too.

That whole website is an FAQ....

I got on there and was running around for about 20 minutes before they took the servers down.

Completely different than what SWG is today. I was in absolute shock.

Never figured out how combat worked, though.

LOL @ NewYork -- so true!

They're going through a round of server updates and patches/fixes, so expect TC3 to be up and down at various times.

BTW, I saw a remark from EMU dev Ramsey in a thread speculating on the impact of the EMU, and it kinda shocked me:
...I really believe Engine3/Core3 is at LEAST on par with proprietary MMO server software, if not better. Engine3/Core3 is not only efficient, but scales well with any kind of hardware you throw at it. SOE runs a room full of IBM Blades for their MMO's, we currently run the TC off a Core2Duo on a 100mbit line. Of course, when the # of people on the TC rise and we upgrade, it'll probably be a small cluster of what you have at home.

Companies like SOE have the capacity to write software that can handle the same # of people at half the cost, but they don't because the extra 20k in hardware is like peanuts. Good software is scarce among the people who have the choice to "cheat"....

I logged back online today...after 20 minutes of trying to figure out how to get off Naboo (Shuttleports, who knew?) I decided to head to Restuss for some PvP...

To my amazement, the city was still standing, no blown up starport....no hand spawn, no comm base...

At that point I logged off...too much Pre-NGE stuff to take in at once. :P

Keep in mind that there is a lot of stuff unfinished. It's not even beta quality.

Some of the main components that are only partially done.

Combat XP (Not needed as you can train without it currently)
Training Costs (Its free to train currently)
Starports (Only shuttles are done)
Crafting (Can only craft very basic items)
Missions (Almost done)
Lairs (Almost done)
Factions (Only work for PVP)

There are no player stuctures, no quests, and not a lot of NPCs. The loot is very limited and you get all your items from blue frogs (gungans, jawas).

So while the combat works like it used to and you can see how the professions work, there is a lot more that doesnt work right.

Ahh, I can see that mostly.

I still don't get the combat. I've been spamming knockdowns the entire time.

Combat had a few major issues at the time.

The first issue: You could incap from mind or action bars, except you needed those to use your abilities and so everyone focused on attacking mind pools.

Dizzy and Knockdown chance was far too high; The victor was often the one who got the first knockdown and kept his opponent dizzy, while attacking his mind pool.

Most classes went through their mind pool real quick using attacks, andthe mind pool was buffed by entertainers and was the only stat that couldnt be healed. If you got an overpowered Rifleman/Combat Medic, they would kill your mind in a few ticks and there was not a thing you could do about it.

They needed to fix those two issues mostly, but never did. So you would fill up your armour with knockdown/dizzy resistances and take KD reduction food (You could stack several foods in your stomach)

The other issue was that melee was the ultimate defensive class. If you stacked certain lines of all main melee classes, you could stack your defence and be almost unstoppable; add to this your 90% resist composite and and super powerful doc buffs and you could take on anything.

The Emu, for now, is focusing on getting back to where Pre-CU was before they brought in CU. Once they do that they will work on rebalancing things like that.

It's not so much the bugs that everyone misses, its the sandbox. You could be any class you wanted at any time and mix any boxes you wished. Everything you used was crafted, and there was no magic abilities, everything was a skill or a consumable item.

Yes someone else is building up the old game. It's online, but it's only half a game right now.

SWG-EMU is a completely player-originated project. They built the server software from scratch, but you the player are required to install the client software from the retail discs. These can be any version of SWG, from the original 3-disc set from 2003, or the Complete Adventures DVD, or whatever. The only version of the client that's NOT compatible is the free-trial download. It HAS to be a retail version of the client.

Sound effects for the Emu are hilarious.

At least the sounds for whaling on your enemies armor with a power hammer. :P

Very fun game indeed.

It would be funny if swg went kaput and shut down, but the EMU became better than swg and started up as a business and became the best mmo in the world.

Damn i dont have the retail discs, have to scrounge them from somewhere

From what I gather (although the Emu devs are keeping mum about it), Lucas is treating SWG-EMU the same way they treat Star Wars fan films: live and let live, so long as the people producing the project don't try to turn a profit off it. So it and any servers running the game will almost certainly forever be free-to-play, supported by donations for operating expenses.

And as long as the EMU devs continue to require valid retail installs. Wont hurt the disc sales any
