Red Dwarf voyages back to Earth

Cult comedy Red Dwarf is returning to TV, 21 years after its initial launch.

The show has been resurrected by digital channel Dave for a two-part Easter weekend special, which sees the cast finally return to Earth.

Written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites the line-up, including Coronation Street's Craig Charles.

The hit show, which ran for eight series on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, won an International Emmy award.

'No holds barred'

Set three million years into the future, the show followed the exploits of Dave Lister, slovenly crew member of the mining ship Red Dwarf - and the last man in the universe.

He was joined in his weekly attempts to make it back to Earth by a cast of oddballs including human hologram Arnold Rimmer, sanitation mechanoid Kryton and Cat - a preening half-man, half-animal who evolved from the ship's cat.

At its peak, Red Dwarf pulled in around eight million viewers and was broadcast in more than 25 countries.

It has sold more than seven million DVDs and videos.

The new two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will be followed by a "no holds barred" episode without sets, special effects or autocue.

The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new episodes.

I had to save room for music, plus it isn't the easiest series to get in the states.. Allot of the serties they show on BBC America never make it to region 1 dvd's, there was a series the BBC did on Auschwitzs wich was great that they never made avaliable here in the states. ( Auschwitz - The Nazis And The Final Solution )

Damn it, I broke down and bought it anyway..Amazon.uk, lol they will ship for 3.99
GBP to the US, now I just need to figure out how to unlock my dvd player regions codes, or figure away to get it to play on my computer...I am not sure why the BBC didn't release this to any other regions than 2+4..probally due to the strength of the dollar sucking so bad.

I don't think it has anything to do with the dollar at this or any other time. It will likely be due to licensing, royalties and other legal considerations. One of my favourite, non SciFi, television shows, Third Watch, has taken a long time to come to DVD because (iirc) of the music they used and the cost of arranging permission (and I presume royalty payments) from the artists and record companies who provided much of the music for the series. Worse yet, you can only buy the first season of the six that were broadcast and the makers have said that they will not be releasing the rest onto DVD. :(

usually the cheaper the better

i could do it on a £30 shiter, but couldnt do it on a £200 sony system

also windows lets you change your dvd region 5 times
so change it, rip it, change it back

Well I have tried to rip it with 3 different programs so far with no luck, I can play it on my computer though. I am not sure what type of copy protection they are using but so far they have stumped me..
i may break down and buy a region free dvd player, i seen a region blu ray on ebay and they are backward compatible so i might go that route. apparently my 5 disc sony dvd player need a mod chip to change the region code on it, most dvd players have a hidden option screen to change regions..
i did make a mistake about Red Dwarf i actually have 8 seasons only missing the last 2 thinking about buying the boxed set you smeg heads.
