what are you recommendations for a top DVD burner?
As im currently in the market to find one so i can rip some of these f'n divx rips to dvd to watch on standalone player upstairs for the parents.
Having so many probs with ripping a movie an splitting it using the TMPGenc/ virtual dub method, where i get problems with audio sync, but picture quality is good :\
So any help an info on this?
I was leaning towards the Pioneer 106 OEM for round $230 ish
As i dont really want to spend anymore than $300 if possible.
Cheers.

I've got a Sony DRU-510A and it works well, but I've found it doesn't like a lot of the cheaper disks.
I paid $347 for it a bit over a month ago, but I don't know what it's selling for at the moment.

I have a liteon dvd +/- burner which is doing good. Doesnt seem to like cheaper discs (Info media) which burnt at one speed but shintarosbrun fantastically on it and takes around 13 minutes at 4x on a dvd-r. Iam yet to do a firmware upgrade on it to see if it corrects the cheap media problem but will sometime. I tried to burn some dvd+r media just yesterday and the bastard shows up as only 308 megs. Again i think it could be firmware or maybe a dodgy brand. But overall good burner, but it comes with shit software so if u wanna burn like data use nero etc.
You can get this burner for under 300 bucks now as well
Werd
Oh and if anyone knows what the problems could be msg me. I would love to find out. Oh again, if u know how to burn multiple vcd on a dvd msg me as well

Been looking into dvd burners as i am going to get one myself.
The LG ???4040 is the fastest, for CDR, CDRW and bus speeds, plus comes out on top of the couple reviews i read, followed next by the Pioneer A06, which is a fair bit slower when it comes to CD media, though i dont really care. From my experience and others, LG have not been the most reliable. For peace of mind and reliability, I will be getting the Pioneer AO6. I was talking to James in at Tas Principal about it also, he pretty much comfirmed what I just said and it so happened so did a passer by.
Though the LG might have more features and slightly faster, The pioneer has the name and has proven itself worthy in previous models.
I have a pioneer DVD drive at the moment with a LITEON 52x burner, so im not concerned about the CDR speed from the A06.

I don't have a dvdburner, but I know a couple of people with the A06 (or the OEM equivalent) - they seem quite happy with it.

cheers for the replies fellas
i was so leaning towards the LG, basically because i have a few mates who have this brand an recommend it.. but ive heard great things bout the pioneer, an read good reviews as anach said.
So i reckon the pioneer is the go as its pretty cheap, im also goin to pickup a 40gb seagate for the old man, since hes always runnin outta hd space cause i stole hes 40gb so i could use it on my pc to get more goodies ;D so now he can actually install more than 2 games without the hd filling up
As im not really concerned about speed of burning, i mean ive been using a fkn 4x/8x CD-R/RW burner now for years lol so im used to burning @ 8 speed max :\ i was plannin on getting a faster burner (CDR/RW one), but id rather a DVD one instead.
Plus ta for the link S.Traaken might have a look cheers
as i cant wait to rip stacks of my movies to dvd for the standalone upstairs.. hope its alot easier as ive heard it is ;D

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as it may appear. It depends on the format of the movie downloaded. If it's mpeg, and not already in the correct format, then you will probably have video/audio sync issues once it is re-encoded.
Why? It's a long and sad story. I'm currently in the process of investigating what can be done to fix movies like this, but not having any luck so far.

I'm a 'bit' interested in digital video editing, although unfortunately I don't have the resources to play with it and get experience.
I'd like to hear your story John... I thought that MPG translation was pretty straightforward, although I mostly work with avi's so I don't know too much about that field.
When (if) I get a dvd burner, I would be looking at transferring (or encoding) multiple mpg streams from CDR to DVDR.

Well, at 2am last night I finally cracked the problem. I'm testing this now, and if the solution works for a couple of other mpegs, I'll start a new thread here and share the technique.

hows it for ripping .avi files to DVDR johnd is that easy? cause the majority of my movies are all in .avi format (about 130gb of them) so is it straight forward to just rip/encode the avi to DVDR disc to play in a standalone? or i need to do the same thing i had to with CDR's ? rip/encode/split/burn as SVCD??
let me know anyway dude,
cheers.

well my pioneer dvd burner 106 turned up yesterday
picked it up brought it home an installed it, an its running like a treat. Only thing is it burns @ 2x
but thats cause i havent put the firmware on yet to unlock it to burn at faster speeds, but i just wanted to test to see if it works an goes ok before doing that.
So im a happy with my purchase an would recommend the burner to anyone, sure the LG is proberly faster, but i want a reliable burner that will last me awhile (few years) till the next big thing is out anyway
cheers again fellas.
PS: when you goin to start that thread john? can you lemme know when you do mate? cheers cause id be interested in hearing how you went.

Fairly busy at the moment with some theatre shows, so probably won't get around to it till after Christmas.
However, for copying commercial DVD's that you own so that you have backups
I recommend DVD Xcopy Platinum which is on my share.

I got an A06 a couple of weeks ago. The problem with the 8x drives is that there is little (or no) blank discs to use.
It's like the 24x CD-RW speed on drives. Just try and find CD-RW that work at that speed!

Yes I got myself the A06 also. Well the OEM version the "106"

I found this guide you guys might be interested in -
http://home.mchsi.com/~jejm1975/Complet ... _guide.htm
just ignore the first part, an just add your .avi files to TMPGEnc and encode em.. im going to give it a go tonight away, cause i reckon its going to take awhile to encode a 700mb avi into 1.4gb mpg.. but it saids i can fit 3 to 4 movies on 1 DVDR disc so see how it goes anyway
Also for ripping DVD'S ive done about 5 so far all perfect, that i rented from Video Ezy
i just used DVDShrink program, to shrink the DVD to under 4.7gb - then you just burn the vobs with Nero Re-encode.. simple as that, just choose from the menu Copy entire DVD to DVD.. then set it all up, it gives you options like what languages you want, if you want directors audio in the movie (dont do this lol so annoying) an other misc things.. an it just makes a complete backup mirror image of the movie onto a burnt DVDR disc. Only thing is it takes out all the extras/menu/chapters stuff, but u dont really need that shit all i want is the movie.
Also when you goto play the DVD it comes with subtitles on automatic, so just use your remote that comes with ya standalone DVD player an turn them off if they annoy you too much, cause its like watching SBS with all the text running across the screen lol. :\
I did WindTalkers an at the start a guy gets hes hand chopped off by a Jap, an it comes up on screen going 'Argh!, My hand!!' an im like oh ffs i dont want that shit comming up all the time so i disabled it
easy.
Anyway give it a go, im sure their are better ways but i did it this way, just make sure you have 4gb spare on your hd so u can use DVDShrink to rip the DVD to hd then burn.
Oh also for Nero Re-encode just goto
www.nero.com/en/ an download it, as its a addon for Nero 6 ultra edition.
Cheers.

there is also a guide on doom9.org for doing dvd backups.
There is a few ways to do it the quick way, or a few ways doing it the long way with better quality results. Most people do it the quick way and most of you wouldnt notice. Unlike myself who is very fussy with sound and video quality.

Well the way i have been doing it so far, i havent found any difference in picture/audio quality what so ever from the original DVD i ripped it from.
But yeah your right, there are some long winded dvd ripped tut's out there that can take you hours just to fucken rip a DVD.. but i cbf sitting their tweaking programs an all that shit, just rather rip the damn thing an take it back

Now i have my DVD burner, im after some software that can allow me to span disks when burning.
I know Easy CD DVD creator 6 does this, but im not putting that software anywhere near my system.
Im surprised nero doesnt.
Does anyone have another alternative for me?

Thanks to this site
http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/ I now have a region free firmware installed which allows me to rip at 2-12x instead of just 2x.
Has many types of drives listed.

Ive worked out this ripping thing pretty much also.
I can follow the complex guides, but really i cant be fucked.
So i choose the "quick and easy" path like most others.
I did Aliens special edition keeping all the menu and special features, it came out pretty fucking good.
Using DVD2one, ripping straight to hard drive, no need for decrypting, as i running "DVD region free" utility in the taskbar while riping, which does on the fly decrypting. DVD2one seems to be about the 2nd best program ive found. As it has the most "Technobabble" features, other than "Pinnacle Instand Copy" which does everything DVD2one does, but also 2pass error correction encoding, so it is said to be the best 1 stop dvd backup software.
Im just grabbing it off emule now for a try. The others like DVDXcopy and CloneDVD dont seem to have the quality. Not only that, DVD2one is probably the easiet to use, though they are all easy. Dvd2one has a very easy drop down box for choosing "Full backup" or "movie only" Plus the easiest options for subtitles and audio tracks.
Ive ripped Aliens special edition with all those programs except Instant copy. Which due to dual pass, will take twice as long apparently.
DvdXcopy wasnt even worth the drive space, the quality is too poor compared to the just as easy DVD2one.
From what i hear, Nero's software is very basic. DVD Shrink, though i havent tried it yet, I do have DVD Shrink on my drive, which is the only free software with much the same options and quality of DVD2one. So probably no noticable difference.
Will let ya know what i think of Instant Copy when i finish downloading it.
If anyone has anything to add?
