Dolby 5.1 from DVD to AMP to Speakers.

Unread post by Anach » Wed Feb 04, 2004 6:41 pm

I have an issue here. I dont know enough about stereo equipment or the requirements for dolby.

2 of my PC's have dolby 5.1 already, but my Home stereo hasnt. Seeing i have just got a DVD player for my lounge, To make like easier for my laptop, I think its time to buy some speakers.

My amp is 5.1, but only has 5.1 outputs, no digital or optic inputs and no 5.1 inputs, only left, right and Video inputs for all components.

My DVD player on the other hand has every output under the sun.

This doesnt make sense to me, what point is there in having a 5.1 AMP that has no 5.1 inputs, how exactly am i meant to get 5.1 from any source.

This is where my understanding of this hardware fails. Do i only need the left and right from my DVD player into my amp to get 5.1?
Can it go from 2 channel to 5.1 channel signal, if so do i get correct surround effect?

My manual for my dvd player says to put the digital output from the dvd to the digital on the AMP, but i have none, or it says to use the 6 RCA connections to the 6 RCA inputs on the AMP, of which there are none.

Anyone know?

5.1 is a sound format, so it can be wired up with a digital cable (rca) or a fiber optic or 5 rca inputs (f, rf, c, rf, rb)

Now if the amp has five speakers and only left right inputs on the box driving it, it aint 5.1!

It will just split the stereo up between the 4 little speakers and use a "pass Filter" to send Base to the central Woofer. bugger.

So basically you need a new amp if you want true 5.1.

Yes that is what i thought and couldnt understand why an AMP would be 5.1, but have no inputs for 5.1. Only to have radio reciever in 5.1, when Music isnt a 5.1 format.

Its just pointless.
