BioShock Demo Available.

The BioShock demo is now officially available, after a poorly executed embargo that prompted a request on The Cult of Rapture that folks hold off until now in order to ensure the availability of proper video drivers. On that topic, the NVIDIA beta drivers with BioShock support are here and the ATI drivers are here. As for the demo itself, the 1.84 GB download is available from 3D Downloads, AusGamers, FanGaming, FilePlanet (registration required), and Gamer's Hell.

Here's my mini review of the 25 minutes it took me to complete the demo.

I'm not a fan of shooters as much as I used to be, i've been spoilt by immersive and detailed RPGs and MMOs that have much more depth to them than the average shooter. Even so, from what i've seen so far, Bioshock does have very pretty and quite awe inspiring levels and what is looking to be a great storyline to boot.

The game runs very smoothly on my 4400, 3gig, x1950xtx, sblive system, as I would expect from an Unreal Engine based game. Albeit without the DirectX 10 features. The demo level is quite dark and most the surfaces are shiny due to the obviously wet nature of an underwater city. I'm sure if you were to brighten it up, you would reveal many flaws that you wouldnt normally see, but that goes for most of these dark leveled shooters.

Usually I find myself getting bored of shooters after the first couple levels of run, gun, pickup, reload tactics, and unfortunately I can see this happening in Bioshock as well. Within the first 5 minutes I had already developed a system of shock, shoot & repeat, just as the guy on your pocket radion tells you.
There isnt much else to a game of this nature, than reaching it to the next save point alive. While the bio-genic weapons are interesting, they dont feel all that unique, especially if you have played any of the Jedi Knight games, they tend to feel just like force powers.

I can see myself playing a few levels of this, getting bored, then wandering through in Godmode to simply finish the story and check out the sunken city's scenery.

i played it on the xbox last week
it's pretty, very pretty to look at
but yeah, it's just another shooter

i cant really play them now after playing rainbow 6 vegas, which was a much more tatical game rather than who can pick up the biggest gun quickest

saying that it comes out on friday, which is the same day i get paid, so i'll probably end up buying it

back to the game, it's fuuuun
way way better than the demo shows
its quite creepy
and not all shooting, alot of other stuff to do
and having a flamethrower for a laft hand is awesome
